Universities have been fined substantial sums by the federal government due to inadequacies in their effort reporting systems. The Texas A&M University System has developed a new electronic time and effort reporting tool which is expected to launch in the next few months. TEES is working with Texas A&M University and other members of The Texas A&M University System as well as the Research Foundation to coordinate implementation of the new system and to provide guidance to researchers in using the new system. TEES will keep researchers informed as information becomes available.

Universities told to provide professional development for postdocs Â
The US government has taken steps to insure that postdocs receive professional development for the next stages of their careers by stipulating that National Science Foundation grants that fund postdoc positions include descriptions of mentoring and professional development opportunities which will be offered them. And the NSF grant review process will include an evaluation of these activities, reports Doug Lederman in the August 20 issue of Inside Higher Education. The pressures are intense to focus postdocs exclusively on research outcomes, so leaving the responsibility of career preparation for postdocs to the P.I.s does not work.
